How will it work?

Under the I.M.A. NHS Community Midwifery Model:

The Pregnant woman will be given a list of midwives from which to choose

The woman will contact the midwives and choose the one with whom she feels most comfortable

The midwife will enter into a standard NHS contract with a set fee per woman

The midwife and the woman will have full access to NHS facilities

The woman will choose the place and type of birth which most meets her needs.

An Equal Partnership based on trust will:

Enhance women's satisfaction

Offer continuity of care

Offer midwives a different way of working

Increase recruitment and retention of midwives

This model will run alongside existing maternity services, giving women choice in the kind of care they wish to receive and midwives the choice of how they wish to practice.

For more examples of how the model will work in practice see our More Information and Frequently Asked Questions Pages
